Japan's Energy Strategy in the Context of Global Instability and the Fourth Energy Transition
The study of Japan’s energy policy requires a comprehensive approach due to the country’s specific historical background and unique geopolitical position. Traditionally, energy security has played a particularly significant role in Japanese policy, but became even more pressing following the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster. Amid the deterioration of the global situation in the early 2020s, Japan has been forced to adapt its energy strategy to effectively respond to emerging challenges, including the need to achieve environmental targets and maintain the energy transition. This paper examines the contemporary challenges Japan’s energy sector is facing, as well as key changes in the forthcoming 7th Strategic Energy Plan compared to the previous one, with particular attention to their implications for the future of Japan’s energy sector.
