Nuclear Power Industry, Ecology and Society in Japan and China

In recent decades, the number of both supporters and opponents of nuclear technologies has been growing around the world, debating its safety and environmental impact. Due to energy shortages, the growing dependence of the Far East countries on resource imports and the need to reduce carbon dependence, nuclear energy is viewed by experts as a viable alternative. After the accident at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant (2011), radiation phobia and negative attitudes towards nuclear energy became widespread among the populations of Japan and Taiwan. In China, by contrast, the public is generally supportive of the use of nuclear energy. In turn, established public opinion has a significant impact on political decisions and even the balance of power within the country. At the same time, the results of the surveys indicate that the population is poorly informed about radiation safety, and this lack of knowledge provides fertile ground for the distortion and even “mythologization” of facts and real events.
Scientists call for increased public awareness and knowledge about the scientific assessment of radiationrelated
environmental and medical risks. Clearly, radiation safety is not only a technological and medical
issue, but also an important socioeconomic and political problem that requires close attention. Therefore,
establishing and developing educational projects in this area seems useful.
