Consumerism in the Soviet Society of the 1950s-1980s in the mirror of historiography
The article considers the problem of studying the late Soviet consumerism in the Western historiography and raises the question of insensitivity of the Russian academic community to the consumer society paradigm. Based on the works of Western historians, a narrative of the history of Soviet consumption in the pan-European context is given, which makes it possible to identify its specific features. Particular attention is paid to problems that have received coverage in Western historiography, including the relationship between the Khrushchev and Brezhnev eras, the stratification of Soviet society, and the characteristics of the Soviet consumer.
