“Green” cinema of 1950–2000 in Japan : from horror to harmony

This paper examines the development of Japanese cinema from the beginning of its heyday in the 1950s to the end of the 20th century in the context of the representation of “green” values presented in the program document of political parties of environmentalist ideological orientation – the “Global Green Charter”. The connection between the development of Japanese environmental policy and the evolution of visualization of environmental problems in the cinema of this country is shown. Three stages of such changes in Japanese cinema are described, alternately expressing fear, horror and harmonization.

Keywords: Japan; environmentalism; ecology; visualization; cinema; social psychology.
